Haywire by Okanagan Crush Pad

Summerland, BC

It’s been a long journey for Haywire Wines from a wintry morning in 2005 in Summerland when they slogged through the snow at below-freezing temperatures to tour an old orchard for sale on the corner of the picturesque Fosbery and Switchback Roads. Their wine style has been shaped by the talented Matt Dumayne, working with David Scholefield. They also consider themselves very fortunate to be working with consulting winemaker Alberto Antonini. Alberto, who makes wine in several regions of the world, visits throughout the year for several action-packed days. It all started with their home vineyard, Switchback, that received its organic certification in August 2015 after four intense years of converting it from conventional farming. Their 312-acre Garnet Valley Ranch, purchased in fall of 2012, currently has 30 acres planted and has been farmed organically since day one. We purchased the 50-acre Secrest Mountain Vineyard in Oliver in the spring of 2018, and are hoping to certify that vineyard by the spring of 2019 after five years of organic farming practices.

Narrative Wines by Okanagan Crush Pad

Okanagan Valley, BC

Narrative tells the story of what is most exciting about the Okanagan Valley: geological and climatic diversity in a wine region that spans 120km from north to south. From the north we source delicate aromatic white grape varieties, while juicy bold red varieties hail from the south, touching up against the US border. The Okanagan is a region of stunning extremes and is one of the rarest wine-growing places in the world. It offers both an arid desert landscape with intense heat during the short, action-packed growing season that can end abruptly, and cold snowy winters. A chain of lakes running the length of the valley modify the effect of winter, making it all possible and all the more enticing. Wines from this region are benchmarks for cool climate style.

Agostina Pieri

Tuscany

Located in the southernmost portion of the Brunello zone, the Agostina Pieri estate covers approximately 20 hectares, of which 11 are devoted to vines for making Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. The southerly position of the estate results in vines that are lower in altitude – the highest only about 230 meters above sea level. However, the relatively closer proximity to the Maremma allows for cooling breezes which moderate the heat that can often impact the growing season in the southern part of the zone. Since 1991, Agostina Pieri has run her estate with a hands on and hands only approach, taking painstaking effort at each stage of production in order to produce wines to her exacting standards.

Ghostwriter

Santa Cruz, CA

Created to tap the potential of the Santa Cruz area AVAs. In early 2008, Brian Wilkerson and Kenny Likitprakong took over the farming on two old vineyard sites, the Woodruff Family Vineyard planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and The Aptos Creek Vineyard planted to Pinot Noir. They introduced sustainable farming to the vineyards and carried that through with natural winemaking in the cellar all in an effort to emphasize the sites and their individual terroirs. The Ghostwriter is about Santa Cruz and it’s many terroirs, old heritage vineyards, and the light, acid driven, pretty, perfumey style of wine that it is capable of. “Ghostwriter” represents the idea that a wine may be the pages that contain a story, but that the story itself belongs to the sites, the vines, and the vintage. The winemaker, when successful, may be a lively storyteller, but only that.
